The first Fatman run took place just east of Las Cruces, New Mexico on August 3, 1996. There were six participants who started the race and seven who finished. The run, consisting of 5.7 trail miles and probably 7 or so total miles, crossed over the Organ Mountains at Baylor Pass and descended down the east slope. Kevin Jobe, from Dallas, brought up the tail end of the race, but did finish. The participants were from Texas and New Mexico.
